Child-Friendly Space in Indonesia’s Rattan Community Wins National Award

We’re thrilled to share that The Centre’s Child Friendly Space (CFS) initiative in the rural rattan-harvesting village of Muara Pulau, Indonesia has been honoured with a PAACLA Award. This recognition comes from the Partnership for Action Against Child Labour in Agriculture (PAACLA) Indonesia in partnership with the ILO, and was announced on World Day Against Child Labour 2025.

Launched in 2023 through a collaboration between The Centre, IKEA and Findora Internusa, the CFS was designed with the local community in mind. It offers a safe, welcoming space where the children of rattan farmers can learn, play, and grow, free from the risks of child labour. Our childcare model is tailored specifically to the needs and rhythms of life in Muara Pulau.

The PAACLA award recognises agricultural companies for their efforts to address child labour, acknowledging those that demonstrate commitment and creativity in addressing child labour in agriculture. The judging panel, comprising child rights advocates, labour experts, and government representatives, evaluated nominees on impact, innovation, sustainability and scalability. In March 2025, seven companies across multinational, national, and local categories were selected, with Findora Internusa among those recognised for their outstanding contribution.

At the award ceremony, Pribudiarta Nur Sitepu, Acting Deputy for Special Child Protection, underscored the urgency of our work, noting that child labour cases in Indonesia surged from 1.01 million in 2023 to 1.27 million in 2024. His message was clear: partnerships across government, business and civil society are more important than ever to eliminate child labour.

Winning the PAACLA Award is more than a milestone; it’s a reminder of what’s possible when businesses and civil society work together to build safe, supportive and sustainable communities where children can thrive.
